 Beijing  - China

Four UNESCO-World Heritage Sites - the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the Great Wall are easily accessible from Aman at Summer Palace, Beijing, with the Summer Palace in walking distance and the Great Wall just a two and a half hours' drive away. The 290-hectare Summer Palace is immediately adjacent to the resort. Built in 1750, it long served the Qing Dynasty as an imperial retreat, used to escape the summer heat of the Forbidden City. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong, from 1736 to 1795, the Summer Palace assumed its current layout, although it was the Empress Dowager Cixi who had the most influence on the Palace, as she had to rebuild it after it was destroyed by Allied Forces in 1860. Today the Summer Palace encompasses the contemplative Kunming Lake as well as a variety of palaces and gardens. The home of emperor's since the Ming dynasty, the Forbidden City is the physical core and historical heart of old Beijing. Another signature attraction, the Temple of Heaven was the site of annual sacrifices by the emperors to heaven. The Great Wall needs no introduction, it is a 'must see' for any visitor to East Asia.

Simple and redolent of the past, the Rooms and Suites feature traditional wooden screens and bamboo blinds, creating a mysterious sense of peeking through the veil of time to the romance of another era.Adjacent to the East Gate of the Summer Palace grounds, Aman at Summer Palace, Beijing is housed in a series of dwellings, most of which date back over one hundred years. Some of the original dwellings were used by guests of the Summer Palace awaiting an audience with the Empress Dowager Cixi at the turn of the twentieth century.

Aman at Summer Palace, Beijing offers a variety of accommodation which pays homage to the traditional architecture of the Summer Palace, celebrating its courtyard architectural style. Suites surround an internal courtyard featuring an intricate latticework of pathways, separating formal gardens and trees. The aesthetic references draw upon traditional materials and the architecture and design of the Ming Dynasty period. Floors are finished in Jin clay tiles which have been polished to achieve a deep lustre. The ceilings are mostly open to exposed wooden roof beams and structural columns.

Its beauty is revered country wide and it is one of the most visited sites by domestic travellers. With its historic bridges, pagodas, islands and gardens, it can be visited at any time of the day although it is at its most peaceful early in the morning. Guests of Amanfayun are privileged to have access to an historic pavilion on the shore of the lake where a number of boats are available to take guests to both well-known and lesser-known attractions.
